- Giverny ... French Impressionist painter Claude Monet spotted the village of Giverny from a train. Househunting in the French countryside in 1883, he discovered Le Pressoir, a charming pink house on land formerly used as a cider farm. This was to be his home for over half his life, or 43 years. Monet and his second wife Alice filled their home with his art, color and touches of Oriental decor, including his collection of Japanese prints. Giverny's bright colors and innovative use of the traditional materials of Normandy were unusual at the time. Most fashionable interiors featured dark somber interiors with massive, dark furniture. Light and color are the major decorative themes at Monet's Giverny, both indoors and outside in the famous gardens. Many of Monet's famous paintings are scenes from his gardens, including the famous lily ponds. In our tribute to Giverny and Monet we have created objects for both indoors and out and a collection of Monet's paintings.
