Why the Middle Ages have been dubbed the Dark Ages, no one nowadays is sure anymore. It is a given that hygiene and other amenities were short but the medieval age was the first of many to come where literature, art and music played a keyrole in life both of the normal peasant and the noblemen. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as well as the German Codex Manesse are only two of many beautifully illumed texts of that era.
